Before I get into today’s post I want to say something about what’s been going on lately with how I feel about my little corner of the internet. I haven’t been loving the pressure (self-inflicted of course) to post constantly and it left me putting off posting while dreading each deadline. I had to have a heart to heart with myself to realize that blogging should be for me and I should be happy with every post that goes out to the internet…even if no one were to read it. So if I haven’t posted for a while, it’s because I am feeling out of love with blogging and refusing to write something I don’t love.

But baby I’m here and ready to post about my current obsession: books.

These are the books that I’ve read this summer and recommend if you’re looking to for your next great read.

My Summer Recommendations

The Immortalists

If you’re looking for a more meaningful beach read.

If you want something that will hook you right from the beginning.

If you want hints of magic.

The Immortalists

A traveling physic tells four children their fortune and we get to follow them throughout their lives to see if it all comes true.

Everything I Never Told You

If you’re looking for mystery without the creepy aura that a thriller brings.

If you want to relate to someone who is an outcast.

If you want a book that talks about family dynamics and the love a family can bring.

18693763

Lydia is dead and as we find out what happened to her, we follow along the family secrets, inner feelings, and actions. We constantly feel empathy and understanding of each complicated turn of events as each family member tells us their story.

The Rules of Magic

If you’re looking for a older, more “real world” Harry Potter book.

If you’re looking for characters you can get attached to.

If you’re seeking just a bit of magic.

34037113

This fast read is full of action without taking away from the secret world of magic and love. We are taken through the lives of three children with wizardry in their blood. I believe this book relates to characters in Alice Hoffman’s other book Practical Magic and I find myself craving more interaction with the Owens sisters.

An American Marriage

If you’re tired of the typical love story.

If you’re dying to read one of the trendiest books of the summer.

If you want to find it hard to pick sides.

35064848

This book is popular but for good reason! A wrongful conviction, a twelve year sentence, and a marriage that was just beginning. This book is anything but the typical summer romance novel.

Dark Matter

If you want to feel like your mind was blown.

If you’re looking for a scifi book without aliens or the far off future.

If you want a book that you can binge read.

27833670

This book currently hold the title for my favorite book of all time! Here is the synopsis that I feel can explain the book much better than I can:

“Are you happy with your life?” Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious. Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits. Before a man Jason’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.” In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible.

I was constantly pausing to mentally freak out about this book and I found the author did a fantastic job describing highly scientific theories in laymen terms so not to deter from the action.

One of the great things about being an adult, is that drinks on a Wednesday after work are totally justified. Although I will be the first to admit that sometimes I am late running out the door purely due to the fact that spent too long trying to find an outfit that would work for both the office and for drinks on the patio.

Whether you’re sneaking in some girl time on a Monday evening or celebrating the end of the week with coworkers, here is the go to outfit that will carry you morning into the night.

I just got back from vacation and my week consisted of morning coffees by the pool with a book in my hand. And honestly, I could not have asked for a better vacation. I don’t start my big girl job until September which means I have the entire summer to sit around and devour as many books as I can.

Wow. I really really really can’t believe that I’m graduating on Saturday. I feel like it was earlier this fall that I was chatting with hall-mates in the dorms, showering with flip flops on, and navigating through campus all by myself.

19 lessons you learn when you have a brother

Today is my little brother’s birthday and I wanted to write a quick something to commemorate his 19 years making my life a whole lot of fun!

I’m extremely lucky to have the relationship that I do with my younger brother. Although we didn’t grow up without the bickering and the occasional wrestling match, we grew up to become close. Being in the same sports in high school really pushed us to have the same interests and even some of the same friends. Dinner conversations revolved around game plays and we took turns complaining about 5:30 AM practice.

If you read about what I wrote for my Dad’s birthday you’ll see that I’m doing something quiet similar. Here’s what I learned from having a younger brother. Happy Birthday Kenneth!

Nineteen things I learned from having a younger brother:

  1. That a good and honest relationship between siblings takes work when you don’t live under the same roof. But the work is always worth it
  2. I have to get used to being asked if he is older because he towers over me and doesn’t shave
  3. That as hard as I try to protect him from the bad in the world, he will experience it. But,
  4. He is stronger than I give him credit for, and he can handle what is thrown his way.
  5. That when I give advice to them, it comes from a place of experience which tends to hold more weight
  6. He’s got my back. Whether it’s being  DD or leaving the door unlocked so I can sneak back in the house, he’s got me.
  7. To value loyalty
  8. That I’ve been training to be a mom since the day he was born due to the amount of times I use to jam the bottle in his mouth or force him to play house with me
  9. I’ve learned to delegate what advice I give him and what choices he can make on his own
  10. He HAS to love me despise how weird I act
  11. and vice versa, I have to love his weirdness too
  12. I’ve learned about cooperation and teamwork. Because “if mom and dad find out we’re so dead”
  13. fighting growing up has taught me not to sweat the small stuff because,
  14. we only have each other to grow up with
  15. I learned some serious negotiation skills to convince him to give me half of whatever he’s eating
  16. That I always have a gym buddy to go with
  17. That he will never fail to surprise me with the knowledge he knows or the things he has learned
  18. That just because he doesn’t do it my way, doesn’t mean it’s wrong. It’s usually just as good if not better
  19. and finally learned that I will always have a best friend.

Happy happy birthday Young Kenneth!
