“By the year 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.” If that doesn’t scare you, make you disappointed, or create some kind of reaction, I don’t know what will. There are so many sickening proofs that desperately demand humans to take action. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the glaciers that are shrinking, animals that are dying, coral that is disappearing. I could go on and on.
I’ll always been passionate about the environment and have taken environmental classes for years now (almost got that environmental minor). And I wanted to create a resolution that reflected that passion. For 2018 I have pledged to #stopsucking and I want to tell you all why you should too.
The movement #stopsucking revolves around people stopping their usage of one-time straws. Straws are not recyclable, they end up in our oceans and in our wildlife. Read about the Strawless Ocean movement here!! “Few people realize that straws are among the top 10 items found during beach clean ups and can do so much harm to seabirds, turtles and other marine creatures.” There’s a viral video of a sea turtle getting a straw extracted from it’s nose because he couldn’t breath. It’s absolutely horrible and I for one am done contributing to adding straws to our oceans.
There are a couple ways I plan on tackling this resolution. When I go out, I will get in the habit of saying “can I have a water with no straw?” or maybe one day when I get bold enough I could even express to my server on why. Spreading the word is key, and that’s why I’m choosing to write about it today. Also there are alternatives to straws for when I just crave that iced coffee from Starbucks. There are reusable straws that are made out of glass, metal, bamboo, etc. There are plenty of alternatives to choose from.
Now I know that sometimes things happen and I might slip up, that’s why I’m going to keep every straw that I use this year. Hopefully there will be hardly any (or none!) and at the end of the year I can say that I made a difference.
If there’s one resolution I wish for you to make, it’s this one. If you want to make a difference this year, take the pledge to go strawless with me! Click on this link to make the pledge and join the thousands of others (including Ellen Pompeo and other celebs!) who are going strawless and making a difference.
Thanks for reading and I hope I inspired you to make a difference, however that looks to you.
