2017 was a whirlwind of a year. I feel like I just blinked and January turned into December. This was a year of many firsts and some wonderful experiences. After sitting down with a tea, I started some serious self-reflecting. I wanted to go back and remember some of the ideas that suck with me throughout the year and today I’m sharing with you all my list of what lessons I learned in 2017.
I can travel on my own
Back in May I packed up my bags and spent a few days in Dublin, Ireland. Before I did this, I never thought that I could be independent enough to travel by myself, eat all my meals by myself, and just be. I tell people all the time that this trip was one of the best and most terrifying things I’ve ever done. But I learned that I can do it, and because of it I’ve become more confident in my traveling skills.
Shots are not your friend
So I turned 21 in March of 2017 so I had enough time to decide what is good and bad for me. Enough said on this one? Yeah. 🙂
Don’t be afraid to experiment with new workouts
In 2017 I did a ton of different workouts. From running to yoga I tried some classes that I never went back and others that became some of my favorites. I’m glad I went to the free classes at school by myself and tried that new barre class or new HITT class, even if it was to just say “I tried it.”
Life has a funny way of working out
2017 was the year BarryChic.blog launched. That never would have happened if I ended up getting an internship during the summer like I planned. The universe was on my side this year because not only did I get to create this wonderful creative outlet, but I still ended up getting an amazing job before Thanksgiving without the internship. It just goes to show you that life has a funny way of working out.
Dolphins are leathery
When I went to Mexico in June, my mom and I were blessed enough to swim with dolphins. I’ve seen them in the wild before and in aquariums but holy cow it was crazy to actually touch them! They are way bigger when you’re actually in the water with them and the best way to describe their skin is like a wet leather. It was an experience of a lifetime!
Don’t be afraid to ask
Ask for the raise. Ask questions in large lectures. Ask that old friend out to dinner. There’s so many wonderful things that can happen when action is taken. Taking charge and going for it can create some great opportunities. And worst case? At least I asked.
Lulus.com, Chicwish.com and TJ Maxx are the best places to find dresses.
I attended five weddings this summer and I’m not even at that point in my life where all my friends are getting married. But I found that these are the three stores that work best when it comes to buying dresses. I actually can’t even choose my favorite dress!
Pay for experiences
In 2017 I went to quite a few concerts and paid for myself to travel. What I learned is that even though these weren’t tangible items, they were some of my favorite purchases. I have amazing memories from these concerts and I went with some of my best friends. And the traveling I did is an experience that I’ll never forget. So, pay for the experience. It’s worth it.
What did you learn in 2017? What are you hoping to take away from this year? See you all tomorrow for another Blogmas post!
