What is the 10×10 Challenge?
Ten items of clothes, ten days. This doesn’t include accessories or shoes. Seems easy? It’s not! I got the idea from Caroline Joy who lives by the mentality of smaller closets, intentional purchases, and less shopping. She totally inspired me to do the challenge! The rules say that any gym clothes, accessories (and as a 1st time 10×10-er I decided shoes were allowed as well), bags and PJs don’t count as a part of your ten items.
Why Did I do it?
After pulling my clothes out of garbage bags after moving back home for the summer, my closet was once again full to the brim. May and June went by and it dawned on me that I kept going back to the same clothes. My gray t-shirt was being worn at least once a week. I’ve been fawning over Caroline’s structure, and in one rainy afternoon, I cleaned out my closet and only had 10 items to wear for the next 10 days.
How Did I Choose my 10 Items?
First I started pulling out the clothes I love: my gray t-shirt, some skirts, three different shorts, a cute off-the-shoulder shirt. But, then I realized that I couldn’t create multiple outfits with my trendy off-the-shoulder shirt. So I started weaning out the trendy pieces and stuck with basics. That lead me to pick out my ten items:
- Gray graphic t-shirt
- Striped tank
- Black skirt
- Neutral cardigan
- Jean shorts
- Striped T-Shirt dress
- Printed Dress
- Chambray Top
- Plain green dress
- Black tank top
What was the 10 Days Like?
Surprisingly most days were easy! It was nice to not have to pick though clothes to try and put a new outfit together. This challenge also pushed me to get creative; I never would’ve paired my printed dress with a chambray top before! Below you can find how I paired my outfits for the challenge.
I don’t regret doing the 10×10 at all! Now am I ready to start living the minimalist lifestyle? No, not necessarily, but it did make me more conscious when it comes to what goes into my closet, and more liberal on what should leave. From now on, I can definitely see myself doing a 10×10 challenge once a season!
Below I also have the (affiliated) links to the clothes I wore. Now, some items were from years ago so I found the similar styles from the same store that are just this seasons style! (Those similar are marked with an asterisk )
Would you ever consider being minimalistic for a week and a half?
